This popular spot is a haven for wine enthusiasts, both new and experienced, where they can taste and learn about wines from around the world.

Inspired and co-owned by Kathy Bankerd, the Carlsbad Wine Merchant’s purchasing philosophy is based on ‘what is in the bottle, not what is on the label’. Kathy and her team blind taste everything.

While they have a selection of over 800 different wines, the local favorite is a unique, proprietary blend of Zinfandel and Petite Syrah called Carlsbad Red. Selected from barrel aged cask stock cellared by Larson Family Wines, the Carlsbad Red cuvee is made from grapes grown in vineyards in the central coast up to Sonoma.

According to Kathy, the Carlsbad Red ‘is an expression of the spirit of Carlsbad’s lifestyle – a rich tapestry of tastes and a well integrated balance of age and youth.’ The label is a colorful abstract that evokes Carlsbad’s reputation for warm and friendly outdoor living: sunsets, barbeques, berry fields and flower fields.

During the month of September 2008, the Carlsbad Wine Merchants donated a portion of their net profits from the sale of Carlsbad Red to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad – a generous decision to support a wonderful local organization dedicated to kids.

Besides great wine, the Carlsbad Wine Merchants offers concierge service with custom etched bottles, exquisite gift baskets, a wine-of-the-month club, and private wine tasting events. In the daily wine tasting bar you can also order a selection of cheeses. ‘We just didn’t want to be another wine shop; it’s a lifestyle store – like inviting someone into your home. There’s a special warmth and ambience’, says Kathy.
